UDP 17
Synopsis
- UDP port 17 is used by the Quote of the Day (QOTD) protocol defined in RFC 865.
- Real implementations include the qotd service managed by inetd/xinetd on Unix-like systems, such as FreeBSD’s inetd and Debian/Ubuntu via openbsd-inetd or xinetd when the qotd service is enabled.
- Microsoft Windows provided QOTD through the optional “Simple TCP/IP Services” feature in Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003, which listens on UDP port 17.
- Some embedded/IoT devices that ship BusyBox with an inetd-style super-server have exposed a QOTD service when configured by vendors.
- QOTD on UDP/17 has been abused for reflection/amplification DDoS attacks, so it is commonly disabled or filtered in modern networks.
