UDP 1900
Synopsis
- UDP port 1900 is used by the Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) for UPnP/DLNA device discovery.
- Microsoft Windows runs the SSDP Discovery Service and Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, both sending/receiving SSDP on 239.255.255.250:1900.
- Home routers implementing UPnP IGD from vendors like Netgear, D-Link, Huawei, and Zyxel (often via miniupnpd) listen/respond on UDP 1900 for control points.
- Media and IoT products including Plex Media Server, Kodi, VLC’s UPnP/DLNA client, Samsung/LG smart TVs, and Sonos speakers use SSDP on 1900 to advertise and discover services.
- Game consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation query UDP 1900 to find UPnP gateways and open NAT mappings.
- The DIAL second-screen protocol (used by YouTube/Netflix on many Sony/Samsung/LG smart TVs) discovers targets via SSDP on 1900.
- Roku devices expose their ECP service and are discoverable via SSDP on 1900.
- Many network printers and IP cameras (e.g., HP, Canon, Hikvision) also respond to SSDP on this port.
- Security note: UDP 1900/SSDP is frequently abused for reflection/amplification DDoS attacks and has had UPnP-related flaws (e.g., CallStranger) enabling scanning, data exfiltration, or NAT injection when exposed to the internet.
