UDP 2638
Synopsis
- Port 2638/UDP is officially assigned to Sybase SQL Anywhere (aka SAP SQL Anywhere, formerly Adaptive Server Anywhere).
- SQL Anywhere uses UDP 2638 for server discovery/broadcast on local networks, so clients can locate database engines and learn the TCP port to connect to.
- Real-world examples: SAP SQL Anywhere 17/16 and earlier Sybase SQL Anywhere/Adaptive Server Anywhere releases; client tools like dbping (with -d), dblocate, and the Sybase Central console use UDP 2638 for discovery.
- Products that embed SQL Anywhere—such as Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager’s “Symantec Embedded Database” in older versions and some SAP deployments—can also generate UDP 2638 traffic for this discovery mechanism.
