TCP 70
Synopsis
- TCP port 70 is used by the Gopher protocol.
- Real Gopher servers include UMN gopherd (original), Gophernicus, Bucktooth, Motsognir, and Pygopherd; for example, Floodgap’s public Gopher server (gopher.floodgap.com:70) runs Bucktooth and hosts the Veronica-2 search service over port 70.
- Other public Gopher servers at universities and hobbyist sites also serve content on port 70 using these daemons.
- Clients that access port 70 include Lynx, curl (and libcurl), and browser add-ons like OverbiteWX/OverbiteNX.
- Many Linux/BSD distributions still package these Gopher servers and clients, enabling live deployments on port 70.
- Security note: attackers often abuse the gopher:// URL scheme in SSRF exploits to craft raw requests to internal services (e.g., Redis), even though the SSRF payload may target ports other than 70.
