Internet TCP port 70 is primarily used by the Gopher protocol, a distributed document delivery service. It was designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. The Gopher protocol was strongly oriented towards a menu-document design and presented an alternative to the World Wide Web in its early stages, but has since been largely supplanted by HTTP. However, a small number of Gopher servers remain active, maintaining the use of TCP port 70.
