TCP 8118

ProtocolTCP
Port8118
LabelsPrivoxy—advertisement-filtering Web proxy

Synopsis

  • TCP port 8118 is most commonly used by Privoxy, a non-caching web proxy and content filter.
  • The Privoxy package on Linux distributions (e.g., Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora) is configured to listen on 127.0.0.1:8118 by default, and the Windows installer uses the same default port.
  • pfSense and OPNsense provide Privoxy packages/plugins that default to port 8118 for HTTP proxying and filtering.
  • OpenWrt’s privoxy service similarly defaults to 8118 on routers.
  • Historically, Tor bundles and many Tor setup guides used Privoxy on 8118 to proxy browser HTTP traffic into the Tor network.
  • This port is often scanned and abused when Privoxy is misconfigured as an open proxy; attackers use exposed 8118 proxies to relay traffic and hide their origin.
