TCP 8140
Synopsis
- TCP port 8140 is the default port for Puppet (both Open Source Puppet and Puppet Enterprise) for agent-to-Puppet Server communication over TLS/HTTPS.
- Puppet agents use 8140 to request catalogs, submit reports, and perform certificate enrollment/renewal with the Puppet Server/CA.
- Ecosystem tools such as Foreman/Katello interact with the Puppet Server’s certificate authority and APIs on 8140 during provisioning and certificate signing.
- IANA also registers 8140/tcp with the service name “puppet.”
- This port is sometimes targeted by attackers who scan for exposed Puppet servers; misconfigurations or outdated Puppet Server/CA setups on 8140 have been abused in the past.
