UDP 9
Synopsis
- UDP port 9 is widely used for Wake-on-LAN (WOL) magic packets.
- Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM/ConfigMgr) sends WOL packets to UDP/9 by default (configurable).
- TeamViewer’s Wake-on-LAN supports the “public address” method by forwarding UDP port 9 on the router to the LAN broadcast to wake machines over the Internet.
- Popular WOL tools such as Depicus WOL (wolcmd/GUI), NirSoft WakeMeOnLan, and SolarWinds Wake-On-LAN default to UDP/9.
- Many vendor utilities and platforms send WOL via UDP/9, for example Synology’s DS Finder app and ASUSWRT’s built-in Wake-on-LAN tool.
- Historically, the RFC 863 Discard service runs on UDP/9 and is implemented by inetd/xinetd (e.g., GNU inetutils, FreeBSD inetd), though it’s typically disabled today.
